What is PTSD?
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) arises as a result of an event that involves imminent death or serious injury or represents a massive threat to the physical integrity of oneself or others. Typical triggers are accidents, robberies, rapes, but sometimes births, surgeries, or incorrect information about life-threatening illnesses. There is a feeling of utter helplessness or horror, which in turn leads to sleep disturbances, increased vegetative arousal, and often social withdrawal.
How does PTSD affect?
PTSD arises from unprocessed trauma. If a person is affected by a traumatic event and cannot defend against it, the processing is carried out during sleep. This often creates nightmares and sleep disorders. If trauma processing is successful, a memory remains, but is not accompanied by violent emotions or vegetative reactions such as heartbeat, sweating, nausea, or the like.
If the brain is overwhelmed by trauma processing, memory and feelings cannot be separated. Certain triggers revive images of trauma, including violent feelings and vegetative reactions. This often leads to permanent vegetative stress and social withdrawal.
Sometimes a first trauma processes relatively well and only a new trauma leads to the image of PTSD (PTSD).
It is assumed that 5-10% of the population will be severely traumatized at some point in their lives and will develop PTSD, a post-traumatic stress disorder.
In addition to sleep disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder often leads to so-called flashbacks, in which certain images or smells relive traumatic situations. As a result, many patients try to treat their symptoms with alcohol, cannabis, opiates, benzodiazepines, or other drugs. Chronic pain can also be the result of a traumatic experience, as can depression and anxiety disorders. Unfortunately, causal trauma is not always recognized, which can lead to incorrect treatment.
Many people with addictions or chronic pain syndromes actually suffer from undetected and untreated PTSD. It is not unusual for them to be people who do not want to admit that they are "weak": soldiers, firefighters, emergency doctors. Sometimes it is the family members who first notice how the person gradually changes. A social withdrawal, association problems, increased consumption of alcohol and drugs. Suicide risk also increases significantly in post-traumatic stress disorders.

The earlier PTSD is treated, the better the prognosis. But long-term trauma can still be treated.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) has been shown to be particularly useful in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. It is the most effective treatment in the world for post traumatic stress disorder.

In the psychotherapeutic treatment of PTSD, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) has been particularly relevant. It is applied worldwide as the most effective method of treating post-traumatic stress.
To treat post-traumatic stress disorder with EMDR one must first establish a relationship of trust between the patient and the therapist.
Treatment consists of the therapist asking the patient to remember certain events and having them make rapid eye movements from left to right. These eye movements generally occur during REM sleep (rapid eye movements), in which we dream and process experiences. Post-treatment of trauma is possible and associated negative feelings are weakened. In addition to rapid eye movements, other bilateral stimulations can also be performed.
Hypnosis and exposure therapy can also be used in virtual reality, where events can be remembered, controlled, and changed to a safe level.
Relaxation techniques such as autogenic training, progressive muscle relaxation, and mbsr are also an important part of therapy, as they help reduce the vegetative state of arousal and ensure better sleep.
In addition to intensive and trauma-dependent psychotherapy, pharmacological treatments and brain stimulation therapies are also applied.
